What to see in Noli

Religious architecture

  • St Peter’s Co-Cathedral: erected in the twelfth Century, it was restructured later; praiseworthy is the altar of the seventeenth Century and a bishop’s chair of the eighteenth century.
  • Church of San Paragorio: it was the first cathedral and diocese of Noli. At the time of its construction, the project conceived the building outside the town wall of the village. Romanesque style, dating back to 1100, built on a pre-existing Early Christian building.
  • Church of San Giovanni Battista (St John the Baptist)
  • Church of San Francesco d’Assisi (St Francis of Assisi): built in 1200, it incorporates the homonymous convent.
  • Church of Nostra Signora delle Grazie (Our Lady of Graces): built next to the bishop’s palace in 1600.
  • Church of San Michele Arcangelo (St Archangel Micheal): built by the monks of Lerins from 1100, today we can only admire the ruins of the ancient building.
  • Church and Lazzaretto of San Lazzaro (St Lazarus): built in 1100 by the Knights of Rhodes for the pilgrims in need of assistance, today it is in a state of ruin.
  • Church of Santa Margherita and Santa Giulia (St Marguerite and St Julia): both buildings are positioned overlooking the sea, close to Capo Noli, accessible by foot through a path. The building is important because in 1100 it housed an hermitage of Jerusalem Knights.

Civil architectures

  • Palace of the Municipality: built in 1300, it was the headquarters of consuls and the government of the Republic of Noli. The palace in the eighteenth century underwent several transformations.
  • Palace Viale-Salvarezza: 1600 building, built on pre-existing medieval buildings. The construction of the palace was requested by Senator of the Republic of Genoa Antonio Viale, sent to Noli by the Doge Giovanni Battista Lercari in 1643 to end the conspiracy of some inhabitants who would hand over Noli to the Duke of Savoy. – Bishop’s Palace: the present building, located at the foot of Mount Ursino, is the result of a 1500’s refurbishment.
  • Pagliano’s House: built in 1300 and restored in the last Century by Angelo Demarchi, assistant architect of Alfredo d’Andrade, in a Neo-Gothic style. During the Middle Age it was the headquarters of the Order of the Knights of Malta.
  • Loggia of the Republic: in front of the palace of the Municipality, it features pebbles among the most beautiful of Liguria. Is made up of two large brick arches of medieval times. The tombstones in it testify the passage in Noli of some important characters, including Dante Alighieri and Giordano Bruno.
  • The Municipality’s Tower: built in 1200 next to the municipal building.
  • Pampona Tower and Gate: medieval, it was built outside the walls of the village and connected with a brick arch to the walkway that descends from the castle of Mount Ursino.
  • Tower of the Canto or dei Quattro Canti.
  • Porta di Piazza (Gate to the Square): it was the only main access to the village

Militar architecture

  • Castle of Mount Ursino: built in medieval times and restored in the sixteenth century by Captain Andrea from Bergamo on the advice of the Republic of Genoa.
