Sanctuary of Madonna of Guadalupe in Santo Stefano d’Aveto

Sanctuary of the Madonna of Guadalupe, formerly church of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, is the only sanctuary in Italy dedicated to the Madonna of Guadalupe. Through historical sources, the religious cult of Our Lady of Guadalupe arrived in Italy through the work of the Jesuit Fathers. Tradition tells us that in 1800 a young boy from Santo Stefano D’Aveto, a student of the Jesuit Order, brought with him an image depicting the Madonna: the image was painted on a copper plate and framed. This image was soon exposed in the village and in the nearby villages, so that in 1805, in addition to the ritual Marian Feast, they started to celebrate also the latter. As a result of the large flow of people arrived, it was decided to ask the Holy See for the possibility of celebrating the mass officially. The request was accepted and the ceremony officially announced in the same year. Inside the sanctuary, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is still preserved, together with a canvas depicting the Virgin donated by Cardinal Giuseppe Maria Doria Pamphilj, Secretary of State of Pope Pius VII.
