Castle Square Pigna

Located in the centre of the village, Piazza Castello (Castle Square) is Pigna’s summit public space. It owes its name to the ancient castle located here in the past, in defence of the original settlement and completely destroyed. It is possible to admire two large medieval plates decorated with the shape of a pine cone (pigna), the emblem of the Municipality, and a sword. Besides, in the square there are numerous gates carved in slate. The square, among the most beautiful of the Ligurian centres, developed in medieval times, opens on the valley with a view of the nearby village of Castel Vittorio. Pigna, every year, hosts the Intemelian Poetry and Comedy Festival, which over the years has become one of the most important dialectal exhibitions in Western Liguria.
