What to see in Cairo Montenotte

Religious architecture

  • Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces – built on the ruins or in the immediate vicinity of a pagan temple, the present structure hides the remains of a Benedictine monastery cell of St Donatus already mentioned in 992 and which became parish church in 1014.
  • Chapel of San Rocco (St Roch) – built in 1648 on the remains of a sacred building.
  • Former convent of San Francesco (St Francis) – built in the 13th Century by the will of Otto Del Carretto, it is the most prestigious monument in Cairo Montenotte.

Civil Architectures

  • Palace Scarampi – 17th Century building, after the abandonment of Cairo’s castle in 1637, it became the headquarters of the different feudal lords of the village. Since 1972, some of the premises have been occupied by the civic library, which was founded in 1958.
  • Villa De Mari – built in the 18th Century, designed by Carlo Barabino with a large park and porch.
  • Roman Bridge – “Alemanni’s Bridge”.
  • Porta Soprana (Upper Gate) – built in the 14th Century and consisting of a low quadrangular tower with a double brick roof opening.
