The castles of Cairo Montenotte and surroundings

  • Cairo Montenotte’s Castle – built in the 11th – 12th Centuries, it was placed under the control of Otto Del Carretto, then sold to Genoa. In 1337 it became a feud of the Scarampi, who lived there until the 17th Century. In 1625, it was involved in the Zuccarello war between the Republic of Genoa and the Duke of Savoy, whose troops destroyed it in 1627.
  • Rocchetta Cairo’s Castle – mentioned for the first time on 5 November 1235, it was donated by the Knights of Saint John to Otto I Del Carretto. It also passed to the Scarampi family in 1337 and later to the Incisa di Camerana. It suffered serious damage during the Napoleonic battle of Dego (1794).
  • Carretto’s Castle – dating to the second half of the 13th Century and partially ruined, it was an important point of sighting and signalling along the “via marenca”. From the castle you can see other mansions of the Del Carretto (Rocchetta, Cairo and Dego).
