The caves of Borgio Verezzi, known as “Valdemino”, are made up of karstic rock. The main cavity was discovered in 1933, and includes a whole series of halls and galleries coming down to Borgio.
Of great importance are also the remains of numerous varieties of animal species found within the cave, dating from 500,000 to 750,000 years ago. They include remains of extinct varieties of animals suitable for living in both hot and cold climates, witnessing the alternation of different climatic conditions over the last two million years.
The waters of the lakes look like mirrors because they are immovable: they are one of the major attractions of the tourist path, which stretches for about 800 meters inside large halls. Several are the concretions of every shape: stalactites and stalagmites develop in all directions, reflecting on the walls of the caves the white, yellow and red colours due to the presence of various minerals. This peculiarity makes Borgio Verezzi’s Caves the most colourful of Italy.
