Borghi di Riviera > Western Liguria > Erli
A village of ancient origins, founded along the path of salt that connected the coast to the most impervious places in the hinterland, it is immersed in the vegetation of chestnuts, orchards and gardens that produce the dishes of the local tradition, strictly accompanied by Pigato, the wine protagonist of this land, which is also cultivated on the terracing typical of Liguria.
Testimonies of residential settlements on the territory are to be found in the Roman period, when the village was a stop for those who passed through the ancient salt path. The toponyms of the place would derive from Eruli, a barbarian population, present in these areas probably during the last period of the Western Roman Empire. In the 10th Century, it was annexed to the Marca degli Arduinici, then passed into the possessions of the Marquis Clavesana, from the 12th to the 14th century. Through dynamic passages, it became property of the Marques Del Carretto, annexing it, since 1397, to the Marquisate of Zuccarello. With the passage to the Duchy of Savoy, Erli became part of the Republic of Genoa, until the period of Napoleonic rule at the end of 1700. Subsequently, with French domination, the territory returned to the Ligurian Republic, the Kingdom of Sardinia, and then the Kingdom of Italy, since 1861.
